Radix isatidis is a biennial herb with a height of 50-100 cm. Smooth and hairless, often powdered. The roots are thick, nearly conical, 2-3 cm in diameter, 20-30 cm long, earthy yellow in surface, with short transverse stripes and a few fibrous roots. Basal leaves rosette-shaped, leaves oblong to broadly inverted-lanceolate, 5-15 cm long, 1.5-4 cm wide, apex obtuse-pointed, margins entire, or slightly shallowly corrugated, with rounded lugs or inconspicuous; racemes apical or axillary, forming a conical at the top of the branches; sepals 4, broadly ovate or broadly lanceolate, 2-3mm long; petals 4, yellow, broadly wedge-shaped, 3-4 mm long, apex nearly flat, margins entire, base with inconspicuous short claws; stamens 6,4 long and 2 short; Pistil 1, ovary nearly cylindrical, columella indistinct, stigma flattened. The short-horned fruit is nearly oblong, flattened, glabrous, with membranous wings on the margins, especially the wings at both ends are broader, and the petals have a midrib. Seeds 1, oblong, light brown. The flowering period is from April to May, and the fruiting period is from May to June. Native to China, it is now cultivated in various places.
